Pakistan Twin Cities Architecture – II

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad ~ Ar Shazia Qureshi

If the place you are living in doesn’t provide a connection to the outside world, then it’s not a suitable living space. This is my philosophy for designing any area, whether it’s office space, commercial property, or a residence,” stated Architect Shazia Qureshi. A graduate of UET Lahore and the Principal Architect at Sohail A. Khan Associates, Ar. Shazia believes that the essence of Pakistani architecture has been lost over time. As a keen observer of how spaces influence behavior, she strives to maximize spatial quality through interconnection, creating flexible and responsive spaces where the outdoors seamlessly blend with the indoors. “A well-designed living space has a profound positive impact on the user’s psychology,” she asserts. Architects play a crucial role in shaping human behavior and the built environment through their designs.

In designing this residence, elements from the Mediterranean style of architecture were incorporated. The main challenge was addressing the split levels of the lawns with very specific requirements. The house, which faces the valley, offers remarkable views that are integrated into the interior on every level. Each level features balconies and green landscapes. Half of the living room and master bedroom rest on classical columns, connecting the lower ground with the ground level. The large windows on each facade maximize natural light and capture the beautiful valley views.

The entrance features a double-height arch with a wooden arched door. The entrance lobby connects all floors with stained glass arched windows on each floor opening to the stairwell. The main living area, the heart of the house, is well connected to both the front lawn and the backyard. The kitchen and living room offer focal views of an exterior water body, enhancing the space with a positive impact on its users. Through her concepts, Ar. Shazia has managed to breathe life into spaces, creating an environment that can be seen and felt both inside and outside this well-connected home.
